Purcell, Henry |pəːˈsɛl, ˈpəːs (ə )l | (1659 –95 ), English composer. Organist for Westminster Abbey (1679 –95 ), he composed choral odes and songs for royal occasions. His main interest was music for the theatre; he composed the first English opera Dido and Aeneas (1689 ) and incidental music for many plays.
