Thack er ay, William Makepeace |ˈTHak (ə )rē, ˈTHakəˌrā ˈθækəri | (1811 –63 ), British novelist, born in India. He established his reputation with Vanity Fair (1847 –48 ), a satire of the upper middle class of early 19th -century society. Other novels included The History of Henry Esmond (1852 ).
