Lewes |ˈluːɪs | a town in southern England on the River Ouse eight miles north-east of Brighton, the county town of East Sussex; pop. 17,000 (est. 2009 ). It was the site in 1264 of a battle in which the younger Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III.
