Weiz mann, Chaim |ˈvītsmən ˈvaɪtsmən | (1874 –1952 ), Israeli statesman, born in Russia; president 1949 –52; full name Chaim Azriel Weizmann. He played an important role in persuading the US government to recognize the new state of Israel in 1948.
