Tchai kov sky, Pyotr |CHīˈkôfskē tʃaɪˈkɔfski | (1840 –93 ), Russian composer; full name Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky. His music is characterized by melodiousness and depth of expression and is often melancholy. Notable works include the ballets Swan Lake (1877 ) and The Nutcracker (1892 ) and the overture 1812 (1880 ).
