かなり

かなり rather ; ｟主に英 ｠quite ; fairly ; ｟話 ｠pretty ; considerably (!通例比較級 動詞を修飾 ) ; well * (!通例前置詞句の前で ) .解説 rather, quite, fairly の順で意味が弱くなる. rather は本来は 「ある程度 」の意だが控えめに言ってかえって意味を強める. quite は 「けっこう 」, fairly は 「まあまあ 」に近い. この用法の quite は通例程度を表す形容詞 動詞を修飾し, ｟主に英 ｠ で用いられる. ｟米 ｠ では通例 「まったく 」の意で用いる. ただし極限状態を表す語を修飾するときは米英ともに 「まったく 」の意となることに注意. rather は好ましくない意味の語を, fairly は好ましい意味の語を修飾することが多いが, この区別は絶対的なものではない. なお, fairly を好ましい意味の語と用いても意味が弱く, たいしたほめ言葉とはならない: あの映画は部分的にはかなりおもしろかったが, 長すぎる Parts of the film were fairly interesting, but it was too long .▸ 今朝はかなり暑いですね It's pretty [rather, fairly, quite ] hot this morning . (!rather は暑くて困る, fairly は心地よく暑いことを含意する. pretty にはこのような含みはない ) ▸ 彼女は水泳がかなりうまい She is rather [quite ] a good swimmer . (!(1 ) rather がよい意味の語を修飾するときは話し手の驚きを暗示する. (2 ) 「a +形容詞 +単数可算名詞 」を修飾する場合は She is a rather [a quite ] good swimmer. の語順も可能だが quite の場合はあまり一般的ではない ) She swims rather [pretty, fairly, quite ] well .▸ 彼はかなり努力した He made rather [quite , ╳pretty, ╳fairly ] an effort . (!rather, quite は 「a +程度を表す名詞 (effort, fool, nuisance, failure など )」を修飾可. ただし, ╳…a rather [a quite ] effort の語順は不可 ) ▸ その患者はかなりよくなった The patient has gotten rather [considerably ] better . (!通例 quite, fairly は比較級の前では用いない ) The patient has rather [quite, considerably ] improved in health .
