BURH
is the same as burg, burgh, with the aspirate. It is Saxon, and signifies a city, a castle, a house, or tower. Hence in composition it signified defense, protection; as cwenburh, [queen-burh ] a woman ready to assist; Cuthburh, eminent for assistances.
