DOBBY Dob "by, n. (Weaving )

 

Defn: An apparatus resembling a Jacquard for weaving small figures (usually about 12 - 16 threads, seldom more than 36 - 4 threads ).

ORIGIN late 19th cent.: perhaps an application of the given name Dobbie, from Dob (alteration of the given name Rob ). The usage is probably an extension of the earlier sense ‘benevolent elf ’ (who performed household tasks secretly ).
