Rising to 29,028 feet (8,848 m ), it is the highest mountain in the world; it was first climbed in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Tibetan name Qomolungma. ORIGIN named after Sir George Everest (1790 –1866 ), a supervisor for the British government in India.
