While mickle and muckle are, by origin, merely variants of the same (now dialect ) word meaning ‘a large amount ’, the misquotation spawned a misunderstanding that has now become widespread: that mickle means ‘a small amount ’, and muckle means the opposite, ‘a large amount ’.
