1. The act or operation of giving a brown color, as to gun barrels, etc.

Defn: A smooth coat of brown mortar, usually the second coat, and the preparation for the finishing coat of plaster.

Other notable works: Dramatic Romances and Lyrics (1845 ), Men and Women (1855 ), and The Ring and the Book (1868 –69 ).
