(!that節は用いない. praise は日常語としてはやや堅い語で, 単に The teacher said he was very diligent. などで表されることが多い ) ▸ その作品はすべての批評家に大そうほめられた The work was highly praised [very highly spoken of ] by all the critics .The work won high [great ] praise from all the critics .▸ 彼の行為はいくらほめてもほめきれない His deed is beyond (all ) praise .We can not praise his deed enough . (!enough の代わりに too much を用いると 「あまりほめることはできない 」の意にもなりあいまい ) ▸ それはあまりほめられたことではない ｟賞賛に値しない ｠It does not deserve any praise .【名誉とならない 】It does not do you any credit .2 【お世辞で 】compliment . （⇨お世辞 ）▸ 彼女の服をほめる compliment her [pay her compliments ] on her dress . (!╳compliment her dress は不可 ) 会話 ▸ 「料理がお上手ですね 」「ほめてくださるなんてうれしいわ 」“You're a good cook .” “Thank you for your [the ] compliment . / I'm flattered (to be complimented ).” (! )内は会話体では通例省略される )
