Buf "fle *head `, n. Etym: [Buffle + head. ]

 

1. One who has a large head; a heavy, stupid fellow. [Obs. ] What makes you stare so, bufflehead Plautus (trans. 1694 ).

[Bucephala albeola, family Anatidae. ] ORIGIN mid 17th cent. (in the sense simpleton ): from obsolete buffle buffalo + head. The current sense (mid 18th cent. ) may be an independent formation because of the duck's large square-shaped head.
