Crock "et (krk "t ), n. Etym: [OF. croquet, F. crochet, dim. of croc hook. See Crook, and cf. Crotchet. ]

Defn: An ornament often resembling curved and bent foliage, projecting from the sloping edge of a gable, spire, etc.

 

2. A croche, or knob, on the top of a stag's antler. The antlers and the crockets. W. Black.

ORIGIN Middle English (denoting a curl or roll of hair ): from Old Northern French, variant of Old French crochet (see crotchet ). The current sense dates from the late 17th cent. , but crotchet was used in the same sense from late Middle English until the 19th cent.

Crock ett, Davy |ˈkräkit ˈkrɑkət | (1786 –1836 ), US frontiersman, soldier, and politician; full name David Crockett. While a member of the House of Representatives 1827 –35, he cultivated the image of a rough backwoods legislator. When he left politics, he returned to the frontier, where he fought for the cause of Texan independence. He was killed at the siege of the Alamo.
