かならず 【必ず 】1 【きっと 】surely, certainly ; 【きっと …する 】be sure [certain ] to do ; 〖間違いなく 〗without fail (!通例約束 命令などを強調する ) ; 【間違いなく …する 】not fail to do ; 〖何としても 〗at all costs .解説 surely は通例主観的判断を交えて 「確かな 」ことを述べるのに対し, certainly はある距離をおいて客観的にいう場合に用いる. したがって surely より certainly の方が確信の度が強い. ただし ｟米 ｠ では certainly の意で surely を用いる傾向がある. surely, certainly とも通例助動詞の後か動詞の前に置かれる .surely は主観的判断を表すことから話し手の強い希望や信念を表すことがある. このときは通例文頭か文尾に置かれる: 君は必ずそこへ行くんだね Surely you are going there .▸ 彼は必ず来るでしょう He will surely [certainly ] come .He is sure [certain ] to come . (!以上2例では主語 He ではなく話し手の確信を表す. したがって話し手を主語にして I' m sure [certain ] (that ) he will come. ともいえる ) It is certain (that ) he will come . (!It を主語にした客観的な言い方. ╳It is sure that …. は通例不可 ) He won't fail [╳never fails ] to come . (!never fail to do は1回限りのことには用いない （⇨2 ）) ▸ 必ずこの手紙を出してください Be sure to [｟話 ｠ and ] mail this letter . (!答えとして 「ええ必ずそうするわ 」は I sure will .) Do n't fail [╳Never fail ] to mail this letter . (!Mail this letter without fail . はやや堅い言い方 ) Remember [Do n't forget ] to mail this letter .Make sure (that ) you mail this letter . (!通例 that節中に未来を表す助動詞を用いない ) 2 【常に 】always, without fail (!後の方が強意的で堅い語 ) ; 【いつも …する 】never fail to do ; 〖必然的に 〗necessarily .▸ 必ずと言っていいほど almost always .▸ 彼は必ず遅刻してくる He is always [always comes ] late . (!always の位置については （⇨いつも ）) He never fails to be [come ] late .▸ 軍拡競争は必ず戦争を引き起こす An arms race necessarily leads to war . (!…causes war は不自然 ) ①必ず …することにしている make a point of 〘do ing 〙.▸ 私は必ず早く寝ることにしている I make a point of go ing [make it a rule to go ] to bed early . (!(1 ) make it a rule to do は非常に堅い言い方で, 今は特別の場合を除いて用いられない. 日常では代わりに always, every, never などを用いる: I always go to bed early. / I go to bed early every night. / I never go to bed late (at night ). (2 ) habit, custom を用いて, It is my habit [custom ] to go to bed early. / I am in the habit [have a habit ] of go ing to bed early. のようにもいえる ) ②必ずしも …とは限らない 【頻度的に 】not always ; 【論理的に 】not necessarily ; 【数量的に 】not all [every ]; 【厳密に 】not exactly .▸ がんは必ずしも不治の病ではない Cancer is not always [necessarily ] a fatal disease .▸ すべての人が必ずしも幸せとは限らない N ó t all people are [ N ó t everyone is ] ↗happy .Á ll people are [ É veryone is ] n ó t ↗happy .
