ともだち 【友達 】a friend ; ｟話 ｠a pal . （⇨仲間 ）解説 日本では少し親しくなると 「友達 」というが friend はよく理解し合い好ましく思う相手にのみ用いる. 単なる知り合いとしては acquaintance を用いる （⇨知り合い ）. また companion は友情の有無は問題にせず単に行動をともにする人の意であるから注意 .friend など, 普通2人以上いる可能性が高い語を所有格とともに用いて, 例えば 「私 [父 ]の友達 」という場合, 次の三つの言い方がある .(ⅰ ) a friend of mine [my father ('s )] は複数いる友達の中から初めて話題に登場する不特定な 「ある友達 」の意. (!╳a friend of me は不可 ) また this, that など指示形容詞を伴う場合にもこの形を用いる: この私の友達 this friend of mine. (!╳this my friend は不可 ) (ⅱ ) one of my [my father's ] friends は (ⅰ ) とほぼ同意だが,複数の友人の中の1人であることを強調する言い方 .(ⅲ ) my [my father's ] friend は前後関係からだれのことか明らかな 「その友達 」の意で, the friend に相当する. したがって, 紹介の場では下の (2:) の例文のようにいうことができる. 話題の初めにいきなり用いると友達が1人しかいないことを暗示する .1 ~(の )友達 ▸ 親しい [仲のいい ]友達 a close [a good, a great ] friend . （⇨親友 ）▸ 男 [女 ]友達 a b ó yfr ì end [a g í rlfr ì end ] / a male [a female ] friend . (!前の方は女性の男友達, 男性の女友達をさす場合は性的関係を含むので, 単なる友人関係には friend だけでよい ) ▸ 幼 （おさな ）友達 a childhood friend .▸ 昔からの友達 ｟旧友 ｠an old friend .▸ いざというときに頼りにならない友達 ｟友達がいのない人 ｠a fair-weather friend .▸ 仕事上の友達 a business associate .▸ クラスの友達 a classmate .
