Regretfully is used as a normal manner adverb to mean ‘in a regretful manner ’ ( he sighed regretfully ), but it is also used as a sentence adverb meaning ‘it is regrettable that ’ ( regretfully, the trustees must turn down your request ). In this latter use it is synonymous with regrettably. Despite objections from traditionalists, this use is now well established and is included in most modern dictionaries without comment.
