ほとんど 【殆ど 】1 【肯定的に 】almost (!形容詞 過去分詞の前で ), nearly ; 【およそ 】about （⇨約 ）【ほとんど …も同然 】as good as, practically, virtually ; 【大部分は 】mostly .解説 almost は 「あとわずかなところで到達していない 」ことを, nearly は 「接近していてあとわずかで到達しそう 」なことを強調する. したがって almost の方が nearly より強意的で, almost =very nearly と考えてよい. (ⅰ ) nearly は very, pretty, not などの修飾を受けるが, almost は受けない. (ⅱ ) almost は no, never などの否定語や any (どんな …でも ), the same, the only, the first などの語を修飾できるが, nearly はできない. （⇨2 ） (ⅲ ) almost は感情 思考を示す形容詞 動詞をも修飾できるが, nearly は時間 位置 具体的な状態を示す語しか修飾できない .▸ ほとんど満員の電車 a train almost [about ] full / a near- full [an almost full ] train .▸ ほとんど1年中家にいる stay (at ) home most of the year .▸ ほとんど (すべて )の学生が英語を勉強している Almost all (of ) the students are [Almost every student is ] studying English . (2 )「よく会う 」は I see a lot of him .) ▸ その事件についてほとんどだれも知らない Hardly any one knows [Almost no one knows, Very few people know ] the incident .The incident is almost un known .▸ 彼は昨夜ほとんど眠れなかった He could hardly [scarcely ] sleep last night . (!この用法の hardly, scarcely は助動詞 could を修飾している ) He hardly [scarcely ] slept (at all ) last night .He could sleep [slept ] very little last night .
