on ly |ˈōnlē ˈoʊnli | adverb 1 and no one or nothing more besides; solely or exclusively: there are only a limited number of tickets available | only their faith sustained them. no more than (implying that more was hoped for or expected ); merely: deaths from heart disease have only declined by 10 percent | she was still only in her mid-thirties. no longer ago than: genes that were discovered only last year. not until: a final report reached him only on January 15. 2 [ with infinitive ] with the negative or unfortunate result that: she turned into the parking car, only to find her way blocked. [ with modal ] inevitably, although unfortunate or undesirable: if banks canceled the debts, these countries would only borrow more | rebellion will only bring more unhappiness. adjective [ attrib. ] alone of its or their kind; single or solitary: the only medal we had ever won | he was an only child. alone deserving consideration: it's simply the only place to be seen these days. conjunction informal except that; but for the fact that: he is still a young man, only he seems older because of his careworn expression. PHRASES only just by a very small margin; almost not: the building survived the earthquake, but only just. very recently: I'd only just arrived back from Paris. only too —— used to emphasize that something is the case to an extreme or regrettable extent: you should be only too glad to be rid of him | they found that the rumor was only too true. ORIGIN Old English ānlic (adjective ) (see one, -ly 1 ). usage: In normal, everyday English, the tendency is to place only as early as possible in the sentence, generally just before the verb, and the result is rarely ambiguous. Misunderstandings are possible, however, and grammarians have debated the matter for more than two hundred years. Advice varies, but in general, ambiguity is less likely if only is placed as close as is naturally possible to the word (s ) to be modified or emphasized. I saw her only once stresses the single instance; I only saw her once leaves it unclear whether she was heard (or otherwise perceived ) in addition to being seen.

PHRASES only just by a very small margin; almost not: the building survived the earthquake, but only just. very recently. only too —— used to emphasize that something is the case to an extreme or regrettable extent: you should be only too glad to be rid of him. ORIGIN Old English ānlic (adjective ) (see one, -ly 1 ). usage: The traditional view is that the adverb only should be placed next to the word or words whose meaning it restricts: I have seen him only once rather than I have only seen him once . The argument for this, a topic which has occupied grammarians for more than 200 years, is that if only is not placed correctly the scope or emphasis is wrong, and could even result in ambiguity. But in normal, everyday English, the impulse is to state only as early as possible in the sentence, generally just before the verb. The result is, in fact, hardly ever ambiguous: few native speakers would be confused by the sentence I have only seen him once , and the supposed logical sense often emerges only with further clarification, as in I've only seen him once, but I've heard him many times.

only

only adverb 1 there was only enough for two: at most, at best, (only ) just, no /not more than; barely, scarcely, hardly, narrowly. 2 she works only on one painting at a time: exclusively, solely, to the exclusion of everything else. 3 you're only saying that: merely, simply, just. adjective their only son: sole, single, one (and only ), solitary, lone, unique; exclusive. USAGE only In normal, everyday English, the tendency is to place the word only as early as possible in the sentence, generally just before the verb, and the result is rarely ambiguous. Misunderstandings are possible, however, and grammarians have debated the matter for more than two hundred years. Advice varies, but in general, ambiguity is less likely if only is placed as close as is naturally possible to the word (s ) to be modified or emphasized: The wording Bill ate only the salad explains that the salad was the sole item that Bill ate. There is no doubt what the statement means. The clear implication is that Bill did not eat the ham, the dessert, or anything else that may have been available. The wording Bill only ate the salad almost certainly means the same thing, but in a literal sense, there is indeed some doubt. The linking of only with ate could imply that what Bill did to the salad was simply eat it; he did not prepare it, or spill it, or throw it across the room, or anything else that one could imagine doing to a salad. In normal conversation, the second statement would probably not be so misunderstood, but, especially when writing, it's never a mistake to favor the less ambiguous wording. Usage notes show additional guidance on finer points of English usage.
