だいがく 【大学 】a university 〘略 univ .〙; a college 〘略 col .〙.解説 Ⅰ university は修士以上の学位を与える権限を持つ総合大学, college は学部の大学をいう. しかし, 総合大学を特に強調せず広い意味での 「大学 」を表すときは, たとえ大学名に university が使われていても, college を用いる方が普通 .建物や場所ではなく機能としての大学教育を表す場合, college は通例無冠詞で, university は通例 ｟主に米 ｠ では the をつけて, ｟英 ｠ では今では無冠詞で用いる. したがって, 一般に学生または教師が 「大学へ通う 」は go to college; ｟主に米 ｠ go to the university, ｟英 ｠ go to university のようにいう. ただし, 修飾語を伴ったり特定 不特定の大学をさすときは米英ともに通例冠詞を伴う: いい [その; ある ]大学へ行く go to a good [the; a ] college [university ]. なお, 一般に専門学部, 大学院をさすとき, ｟米 ｠ では大学のことを school ということもある: 看護学部 the School of Nursing / 法学部 the School of Law; the Law School .
