やくそく 【約束 】名詞 a promise ; one's word ; an appointment ; an engagement ; a date .使い分け promise 私的な口約束から公約にまで幅広く使用される語 ．日本語の 「約束 」は相手との取り決めの意が強いが promise は 「こうする 」という自分の誓い 宣言を意味する ．word 主に 「口約束 」の意で用い ，言葉に対して責任を持つことを含意する ．appointment 日時や場所を明確に指定した面会などの約束を表す ．また ，医師の診察や職務上の面接の予約の意でも用いる ．promise はこの意では不可 ．engagement 主に 「婚約 」の意で用いるが ，時にフォーマルな会合や面会などの約束を表す ．date 日時を設定した人に会う約束という意で用いる ．男女間のデートを示すことが多い ．1 ~(の )約束 ▸ 堅い約束 a solemn promise .▸ 口約束 a verbal promise 【口先だけの約束 】a mere promise . （⇨口約束 ）▸ 援助の約束 a promise of help .2 約束が [は ]▸ 他に [すでに ]約束がある I have another [a previous ] appointment . (!後の方は I already have an appointment . の方が口語的 ) ▸ 歯医者に10時に診てもらう約束があります I have an appointment [╳a promise ] with the dentist at ten .I have a ten-o'clock appointment with the dentist .▸ 人と6時に会う約束がある I have an appointment to meet somebody at six . (!親しい人との私的な約束の場合は I'm meeting [I'm going to meet, I've made plans to meet ] 〘Taro 〙 at six. などの方が普通 ) ▸ 昼食の約束は40分後ですよ Your lunch appointment is in forty minutes .▸ 約束は5時だ The appointment is for [at ] five o'clock . (!後の場合も I would pay となることがある ) 約束する 動詞 promise, make * a promise ; give * one's word ; 【日時などを指定する 】appoint . （⇨決める ）▸ 彼は約束したとおり8時に駅にやって来た He came to the station at eight as (he ) promised .【約束を守ってやって来た 】He kept his promise [his word ] and came to the station at eight . (!前の文より口語的 ) 会話 ▸ (受付で ) 「こんにちは ，営業部のビル ハリスさんにお会いしたいのですが 」「お約束しておりますでしょうか 」“Hello . Can I see Mr . Bill Harris of the Sales Department? ” “Is he expecting you? ” (!Do you have an appointment with him? より感じのよい尋ね方 ) ▸ 「あしたそっちへ行くよ 」「約束する ？」「ああ ，約束するよ 」“I'll come over tomorrow .” “Promise? ” “Yes, I promise .” (!(1 ) I promise you . は通例警告 脅迫を表し不可. (2 ) 改まった関係の場合は次のようなやり取りも可: 「そのことを約束してくださいますか 」「はい約束します 」 “May I have your word on [for ] that? ” “Yes, you have my word. ”) 1 ~を約束する ▸ 彼は経済的援助を約束した He has promised his financial support .2 ~する (と )約束する ▸ 母は私に新しいドレスを買ってあげると約束したの My mother promised me a new dress . (!「(他の者にでなく )私に 」の意で約束の相手である me に重点を置くと My mother promised a new dress to me. となる ) ▸ 彼はそこへは行かないと約束した He promised [╳promised with me ] not to go there . (!(1 ) He promised me not to go there. の型は to 不定詞の意味上の主語が He か me かあいまいになるので避ける. (2 ) He did n't promise to go [╳not going ] there. / He made no promises about going there. は 「そこへ行くとは約束しなかった 」の意. (3 ) 不定詞の代わりに動名詞は不可 ) He promised (me ) [gave me his word ] that he wouldn't [╳didn't ] go there . (!that は省略可 ．that節内の動詞は通例 will, would を伴う ) ▸ 私たちは3年後にきっとまた会いましょうと約束した We said we would definitely get together again in three years . (!このような破っても信義を問われないような内容に対して promise を用いるのは不自然 ) ▸ 彼女と1時に喫茶店で会おうと約束した I made an appointment [an arrangement ] to meet her in a coffee shop at one o'clock .▸ 彼の将来は約束されている ｟有望である ｠He has a very promising future .約束手形 a promissory note .
