(!後の方は反意疑問文 ) ▸ 理由はどうあれそこへ行ってはいけません Whatever the reason (is [｟書 ｠ may be ]), you should not go there .3 理由に ▸ 彼は病気を理由にその会議に出席しなかった He didn't attend the meeting because [on the grounds that ] he was sick . (!because の方が普通 ) He didn't attend the meeting because of [on (the ) grounds of, on account of, owing to, due to ] ill health . (!because of が最も普通 ) He didn't attend the meeting on [under ] the pretext of be ing sick [that he was sick ]. (!実際は病気ではなかったことを含意 ) ▸ そんなことは遅刻の理由にならない That is no excuse for be ing late .4 理由を ▸ 彼に欠席の理由を尋ねる ask him the reason for his absence .▸ 今日ここへいらっしゃった理由をおっしゃってください Tell [Give ] me the reason why you've come [for your com ing, for you to have come ] here today .Tell me why you've come here [what you've come here for, what brought you here ] today .▸ 遅れた理由を説明してくれませんか Could you explain the reason for this delay? ▸ 彼は何かと理由をつけて学校を休んだ He was absent from school on one pretext or another .5 理由で ▸ 彼は健康上の理由で辞職した He resigned for reasons of [by reason of ] ill health .He resigned for health reasons .▸ どういう理由で彼はそれをしたのか For what reason [motive ] did he do that? (!やや堅い言い方 ) What made him do that? ｟話 ｠What did he do that for ? / Why did he do that? (!後の二つの言い方は直接的な表現なので前の二つの方が好まれる )
