Boucher de Perthes, Jacques |ˌbuːʃeɪ də ˈpɛːt | (1788 –1868 ), French archaeologist. In 1837 he discovered some of the first evidence of man-made stone tools near the bones of extinct (Pleistocene ) animals in the valley of the River Somme. He argued that these tools (and their makers ) belonged to a pre-Celtic ‘antediluvian ’ age, but his findings were not accepted until the 1850s.
