つもり 1 【意図 】(an ) intention ; 【目的 】a purpose .①~のつもり ▸ それは冗談のつもりだった I meant / mént / it as [for ] a joke .It was meant [was intended ] as a joke . (!この用法の intend は通例受身 ) ▸ この絵は私を描いたつもりですか Is this picture meant [intended ] to be me? ▸ 遊びのつもりでたばこを吸い始めたがやめられなくなった I started smoking (just ) for fun [for the fun of it ], but never gave it up .②つもりで ▸ 彼は君を手伝うつもりでここへ来た He came here to help [for the purpose of help ing, with the intention of help ing ] you . (!後の二つは堅い言い方 ) ▸ どういうつもりでそんなことを言うのか What do you mean by (say ing ) that? (!しばしば挑戦的な意味を含む ) ③…するつもりである be going to do ; be doing ; be planning to do, be thinking of doing ; mean to do, intend to do .使い分け be going to do すでに決定済みの計画 予定を表すが, それほど確実性は高くなく比較的先のことにも使える. 通例動作動詞を従え, くだけた会話ではしばしば be gonna /ɡɔ̀ (ː )nə / do となる .be do ing 通例時の副詞を伴い ，すでに取り決められた近い未来の確実な予定を表す ．心理的 実質的に準備段階に入っていることを暗示する .be planning to do, be thinking of do ing 計画 考慮の途中でまだ確実には決めていないことを表す .mean to do 本来の意図を実際の結果と対比するときに用いることが多い ．intend to do 強い意志を暗示するやや堅い語 ． ｟話 ｠ で用いると強意的に響く .▸ 来年イギリスに行くつもりです I' m going to go [I' m go ing ] to Britain next year . (!go, come を用いる場合は, be going to go [come ] より be going [coming ] を用いる方が普通 ) I' m thinking of go ing [planning to go, ｟話 ｠ planning on go ing , ｟主に米話 ｠ figuring on go ing ] to Britain next year .I intend [mean ] to go to Britain next year .▸ 今晩は外で食事をするつもりです I' m going to eat [I' m eat ing ] out this evening . (!(1 ) 現在進行形は 「進行中 」の意と区別するために未来を示す副詞を伴うのが普通だが, ╳I' m meet ing him next year [some time ]. のように遠い, または漠然とした未来のことには用いない. (2 ) will を用いると話の最中に外で食事をする決心をしたことになり, 「…しよう 」に近くなる ) ▸ 彼は大きくなったら教師になるつもりです He is going to [╳will ] be a teacher when he grows up . (!(1 ) be going to が遠い将来のことを表すときには通例, 未来の時を示す副詞 (句 [節 ])が必要. (2 ) will では話し手の未来に関する推量を表すので, ここでは不可 ) ▸ 彼は彼女に会うつもりだった He was going to see her . (!厳密には会ったかどうかは不明だが, 会わなかったことを表す文脈で用いられることが多い （⇨会話 ）) He had meant [had intended ] to see her .He meant [intended ] to have seen her . (!後2例のように過去完了形 完了不定詞を用いると通例実現しなかった過去の意図を表す ) ▸ あなたの感情を傷つけるつもりはなかった I didn't mean [intend ] to hurt you .I had no intention of hurt ing you . (!前の方が普通 ) ▸ もしごいっしょしてくださるおつもりでしたらお宅へお迎えにあがります If you are going to [will ] join us, we'll pick you up at your place . (!この will は未来ではなく意志を表すので条件節でも可 ) 会話 ▸ 「今日先生から電話があったのよ 」「何て ？」「太郎君とけんかしたんだって ．本当なの 」「うん ．話すつもりだったんだけど忘れてたんだ 」“Your teacher called today .” “Oh, what did he say? ” “You got into a fight with Taro ．Is this true? ” “Yeah . I was going to tell you about it, but I forgot .”2 【思い込み 】▸ 彼女は自分では美人のつもりでいる She thinks [(信じている ) believes ] (that ) she is beautiful .｟書 ｠She thinks herself (to be ) [believes herself to be ] beautiful . (!think では to be を通例省略することができる. believe では to be は時に省略することもあるが ，信念を強く表す場合には省略しない ) ▸ あの子は怪物のつもりだ ｟ふりをしている ｠That child is making believe (that ) he is a monster .3 【心構え 】▸ 来春ニューヨーク支店に転勤してもらうことになったので ，そのつもりでいてくれ We decided that you would be transferred to the New York branch next spring, so prepare yourself [get ready ] for it .
