むかし 【昔 】【ずっと前に 】a long time ago, long ago ; 【かつて 】once (!通例 be 動詞, 助動詞の後, 一般動詞の前に置く. この意では強勢を受けないのが普通 ) ; 【現在または過去のある時より前に 】before （⇨以前 ）, 【以前に 】formerly, in former times [days ]; 【過去に 】in the past, ｟話 ｠ in the old days ; 【大昔に 】in old [ancient ] times . (!(1 ) in the old world と言ってもその意を表すこともある. (2 ) before, in the past は通例過去 現在 [過去 ]完了時制とともに用い, その他は通例過去時制とともに用いる ) 解説 used to と would : 上記の副詞 (句 )以外に, 「昔 」の意は used to /júːs t tə /, would によっても表せる. used to は (a ) 過去の状態や習慣的行為を現在と対比して表したり, (b ) 過去の習慣的動作を表す. would はもっぱら (b ) の場合に, 主に書き言葉で用いられ, used to より回顧の気持ちが強い. また, いずれも漠然とした過去を表し, sometimes, every Sunday, for years, in one's childhood などの漠然と頻度や時を表す副詞 (句 )を伴うことができるが, ten times, for ten years, in 1990 など明確な頻度や時の副詞 (句 )とともには通例用いない .used to の否定文 疑問文 付加疑問文 否定文 : He never used to …. / He didn't use [used ] to …. / ｟英書やや古 ｠ He used not to …. / ｟英やや古 ｠ He use (d )n't to ….疑問文 : Did he use [used ] to …? / ｟書やや古 ｠ Used he to …?付加疑問文 : He used to …, didn't he? 実際には否定文の never used to を除いて普通の過去形を用いる方が一般的 .1 昔 (は )▸ 昔, 京都は日本の首都でした Kyoto was the capital of Japan a long time ago [long ago ].▸ 昔は婦人に選挙権が与えられていなかった Formerly [In former times , ｟話 ｠ In the old days ], the right to vote was not given to women .▸ 私は昔京都に住んでいた I (once ) lived in Kyoto . (!once はなくても 「昔 」の意は表せる ) I used to [╳would ] live in Kyoto .▸ 昔はよく妹と散歩したものだ I often used to [would often ] take a walk with my sister . (!used often to の語順は堅い言い方 ) 会話 ▸ 「テニスをおやりですか 」「昔は時々やりましたが最近はやりません 」“Do you play tennis? ” “I used to sometimes, but not recently .”2 昔に [を ]▸ 昔をしのぶ look back on one's past / recall one's younger days .▸ 彼らは1500年の昔にそこに住みついた They settled down there as early [as far back ] as 1500 .3 昔から ▸ 昔からの ｟昔の ｠友人 an old friend of mine . （⇨友達 ）▸ 昔からの習慣 an old [(伝統的な ) a traditional ] custom .▸ 彼は昔から ｟ずっと ｠大阪に住んでいる He has always lived in Osaka . (!この用法の always は通例完了形と用いる ) 【子供のころから 】He has lived in Osaka since he was a child [｟やや書 ｠ since his childhood ].▸ (ずっと )昔から君を知っているような気がする I feel I've always known you .昔 (の )形容詞 old ; 【大昔の 】ancient ; 【過去の 】past .▸ 昔なじみの顔 old familiar faces .▸ 昔々 long, long, ago / once upon a time . (!おとぎ話などで最初に用いる句 ) ▸ 昔の友人 （⇨名 ③）▸ 昔の面影 one's former self [appearance ].▸ 昔かたぎの大工 a carpenter who sticks to old-time ideas .▸ 昔ながらのふるさと one's home town exactly the same as before .▸ それは何年も昔のことだ It was ages [a very long time ] ago .▸ 私たちはいっしょに遊んだ昔の日々を思い出した We remembered the old days when we had played together .▸ その町は昔のままだった The town was exactly the same as before .｟書 ｠The town was as it had been .▸ 彼は今では昔のように暇ではない He isn't as free as he used to be [he (once ) was , ｟書 ｠ once he was ]. (!once は省略節などで be 動詞 (や助動詞 )が強勢を受ける場合にはその前に置くのが普通 ) 会話 ▸ 「夕べはどこにいたの 」「そんな昔のこと, 覚えてないね 」“Where were you last night? ” “That's a long ago , I don't remember .” (!映画 『カサブランカ 』 (Casablanca ) の中の名セリフの一つ ) 昔取った杵柄 （きねづか ）｟with ｠skills acquired in the past .
