stokes

stokes |stōks stoʊks |(abbr.: ST ) noun ( pl. same ) Physics the cgs unit of kinematic viscosity, corresponding to a dynamic viscosity of 1 poise and a density of 1 gram per cubic centimeter, equivalent to 10 −4 square meters per second. ORIGIN mid 20th cent.: from the name of Sir G. Stokes (see Stokes' law ).

Stokes, Carl

Stokes, Carl |stōks stoʊks | (1927 –96 ), US politician; full name Carl Burton Stokes. He was the first African-American mayor of a major US city (Cleveland 1968 –72 ). After serving as mayor, he was a newscaster and a municipal court judge before being appointed as US ambassador to the Seychelles 1993 –96.

Stokes' law

Stokes' law |stōks ˌstoʊks ˈlɔ |Physics 1 a law stating that in fluorescence the wavelength of the emitted radiation is longer than that of the radiation causing it. This is not true in all cases. 2 an expression describing the resisting force on a particle moving through a viscous fluid and showing that a maximum velocity is reached in such cases, e.g., for an object falling under gravity through a fluid. ORIGIN late 19th cent.: named after Sir George Stokes (1819 –1903 ), British physicist.

Stokes' theorem

Stokes' the o rem Mathematics a theorem proposing that the surface integral of the curl of a function over any surface bounded by a closed path is equal to the line integral of a particular vector function around that path. ORIGIN late 19th cent.: named after Sir G. Stokes (see Stokes' law ).
