できる 【出来る 】助動詞 〖能力がある 〗can *; be able to 〘do 〙; be capable of 〘do ing 〙; 〖可能である 〗be possible (↔ be impossible ) (!It is possible (for +人 ) to do で用いる ) ; 〖可能にする 〗｟書 ｠enable 〘+人 +to do 〙 (!物 事が主語 ) .解説 be able to は 「実際にできる 」ことに, be capable of は 「(潜在的 )能力がある 」ことに重点がある. can はこの両方を含みこの中で最も一般的 .be able to は通例 「物 」を主語にできない: そのホテルは800人収容できる The hotel can [╳is able to ] accommodate 800 people .be able to は受身では用いられない: 彼は容易に救出できない He cannot be [╳is not able to be ] rescued easily .can の否定は can't または ｟書 ｠ cannot が普通 （⇨［上例 ］）. can not は特に堅い言い方や, 修辞疑問文, 肯定文との対照を示す場合に限られる .can と be able to . 一般に be able to の方が堅い語で, 能力を強調する .(a )現在時制ではどちらも可能だが, can の方が普通. （⇨1 第1文例 ）(b )未来時制では can は用いず will be able to を用いる. ただし未来についての現在の判断を示す場合 （⇨1 第2, 3文例 ） や if 節では can を用いる: あす彼に会うことができたらその本を渡しておきます If I can [╳will be able to ] meet him tomorrow, I'll give him the book .(c )過去時制では原則として次のような使いわけがある: (ⅰ ) 〘肯定文で 〙 過去の一般的能力を表す場合は could, was able to のいずれも可: 彼は若いときはフランス語を話すことができた He could [was able to, used to be able to ] speak French when he was young. (!used to … は現在はできないことを暗示 ) しかし過去の一回限りの行為については could ではなく was able to を用いる: ついに彼は試験に合格することができた At last he was able to [╳could ] pass the exam. この場合, At last he managed to pass [succeeded in (pass ing )] the exam. あるいは単に At last he passed the exam. ということも多い. なお次のような場合 could は可. He could hardly speak French. (彼はほとんどフランス語を話すことができなかった )のように hardly, only, just などの修飾語句を伴う場合. I could ｟was able to ｠ see him through the window. (窓から彼が見えた )のように知覚動詞 (see, hear, smell, feel など )とともに用いる場合. He said he could ｟was [would be ] able to ｠ finish it by tonight. のように従節中で用いる場合 .(ⅱ ) 〘否定文で 〙 couldn't, was not able to のいずれも可: 彼女はセーターを編むことができなかった She couldn't [wasn't able to, was unable to ] knit a sweater. (!couldn't はもともとセーターを編む能力がないことを, 後の二つは試みたができなかったことを含意 ) (ⅲ ) 〘疑問文で 〙 could, was able to のいずれも可: 彼はその質問に答えることができましたか Could he answer the question? (!答えは Yes, he managed to [╳could ]. / No, he couldn't .) (d )現在 [過去 ]完了では can は用いず have [had ] been able to を用いる: 彼はその問題を解くことができなかった He hasn't been able to [╳hasn't could ] solve the problem .1 …が [は ]できる ▸ 彼はスキーができる He can ski .He is able to ski [is capable of ski ing ].▸ 私は1週間でその仕事をすることができる I can do the work in a week .It is possible for me to do [╳I am possible to do, ╳It is possible that I will do ] the work in a week . (!╳The work is possible for me to do …. は不可だが, 否定語 準否定語が入ると可: The work is impossible [hardly possible ] for me to do ….) ▸ このゲームは幼い子供でもできる This game can be played by young children . (!日本語との対応にも注意 ) ▸ のこぎりがあればそれは簡単にできるのだが I could do it if I had a saw . (!仮定法の表現. 「のこぎりがあればそれは簡単にできたのだが 」のように過去のことについていうときは I could have done it if I had had a saw. となる ) ▸ 彼女はスケートができるようになった She has learned [become able , ╳become ] to skate .▸ 絶対ミス [遅刻 ]はできない We can't afford to make a mistake [to be late ].▸ 彼にはその仕事はできない He is unequal [not equal ] to the job .The job is beyond him [his power , his ability ]. (!He can't do the job. は能力がないのか, 何かの事情でできないのかあいまい ) 会話 ▸ 「やっとちゃんとできたよ 」「よくやったね!」“At last I managed to [╳could ] do it right .At last I' ve got it right .” “Well done! ”2 …することが [は ]できる ▸ 私はいいプレゼントを見つけることができなかった I couldn't find [failed to find ] a good present .▸ そんな高い本を買うことはできません ｟買う余裕はありません ｠I can't afford (to buy, ╳buy ing ) such an expensive book .▸ その事実を否定することはできない There is no deny ing [It is impossible to deny, ╳It is impossible that we deny ] the fact .
