TAYLOR-WHITE PROCESS Tay "lor-White " proc `ess. (Metal. )
Defn: A process (invented about 1899 by Frederick W. Taylor and Maunsel B. White ) for giving toughness to self-hardening steels. The steel is heated almost to fusion, cooled to a temperature of from 7 º to 85 º C. in molten lead, further cooled in oil, reheated to between 37 º and 67 º C., and cooled in air.

He negotiated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 with Great Britain that stated that any canal built in Central America would be under the joint control of Great Britain and the US. As the last Whig president, he came into conflict with Congress over his desire to admit California to the Union as a free state (without slavery ) and died before the problem was resolved.
