Oxford Thesaurus
grateful
grateful adjective I was most grateful for your hospitality: thankful, filled with gratitude, appreciative; indebted, obliged, obligated, under obligation, in your debt, beholden. ANTONYMS ungrateful. CHOOSE THE RIGHT WORD grateful, thankful, appreciative These words indicate various forms of awareness of having been fortunate or well treated. ■ Someone who is grateful realizes that someone else has helped them or treated them kindly, and has warm feelings towards that person (we're most grateful for your help | her whole family is grateful to the surgeons who saved her ). Grateful, in fact, suggests more of an impulse to thank someone than thankful does. It is also used in polite requests such as I would be grateful if you could let me know. ■ Thankful is typically more concerned with a person's attitude to their good fortune than with their feelings towards anyone responsible for it. It suggests that someone is relieved or pleased about a situation or turn of events, often one for which no particular person can be identified as responsible (she was thankful that she felt so much better | I have a lot to be thankful for ). ■ The main use of appreciative is to say that someone recognizes the merits or appeal of something and expresses that recognition in actions or words (they were the most appreciative audience we'd played to ). If what is appreciated is a kindness or service, appreciative is used with of and often also implies gratitude (the team are very appreciative of your support ).These notes show fine distinctions in meaning between closely related synonyms to help you find the best word.
