TANTALISM

n.[See Tantalize. ] The punishment of Tantalus, a teasing or tormenting by the hope or near approach of good which is not attainable. Is not such a provision like tantalism to this people?

n.The ore of tantalum or columbium, a newly discovered metal. It is an iron black color, sometimes with a tinge of blue. It is imbedded in angular pieces, from the size of a pea to that of a hazel-nut.

To tantalize is to visit with the bitterest disappointment -- to torment by exciting hopes or expectations which can never be realized.
